Arthroscopy

At Virginia Spine and Sports Orthopaedics, our surgeons perform the latest arthroscopic techniques in treatment of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, knee, and ankle.

Arthroscopy is a surgical technique that orthopaedic surgeons use to visualize, diagnose and treat problems within a joint. An arthroscopic procedure involves making several small incisions that enable the insertion of an arthroscope, a pencil-sized camera, within the joint. By magnifying and illuminating the joint’s structures, the arthroscope allows the surgeon to view the interior of the joint on a television monitor. Additionally, by utilizing specialized instruments, implants and techniques, advanced surgical procedures can be performed. Arthroscopic surgery precludes the need for extensive incisions, diminishing tissue injury, and reducing postoperative pain while speeding patient recovery.
